Let there be light (and heat)

Ok, taking this as a how not to do it:

(washing up liquid and petrol apparently)

How would you make a lightsaber? I think it should involve a lot of the chemical you make glow sticks out of. This is cold at least - but I think it might be caustic.

There is extra bonus it anyone can think of a way of doing it with a LARP weapon.

Evolution in action, I think.

Cyalume, the stuff in light sticks, is pretty non-toxic. The only risk is that if you get it from an actual light stick, as opposed to mixing it up yourself, then there will be broken bits of glass in it. (They use a glass pellet to contain one of the two chemicals until you snap the stick.)

As for how to make a glowing boffer weapon... Glow in the dark tape, properly charged, looks more impressive than I expected in the dark. Carry around a battery-powered black light to charge it, and it works even better.

In particular, sticky backed EL tape that they sell to make glowing strips for remote control cars etc.

and the glowing string

two five foot lengths of EL glowing string including controller/inverter to run it from a 9v battery, twenty seven dollars and it only weighs (in total!) 2oz (so just over 50g).

Take your larp padded foam water pipe cover, cut slots down the sides for the string, put the batteries and inverter in the handle. Use two kits if you want to double up to four strings, and then either do a long lightsabre with four strings or a short (2.5 feet) and loop the strings back to give eight (four up and four back)

Alternatively, use some sort of inflatable soft plastic tube for the lightsabre and put the strings inside ... if you lightly frost the tube to diffuse the light inside then you could probably actually deflate and inflate the tube and have the strings work with that to give you a lightsable you can fold away!

Or just use the old flashlight shining up a frosted tube!
