Leather

Last night made the leather badge for the front of the jacket. It will hang down from the button of the pocket (a bit like French police badges). It is the first time I tried embroidering leather. It worked quite well. It did tend to snap the thread more than fabric and some of the detail is a little lost as the thread sunk a bit into the surface. Using a top dissolvable stabiliser like you do with fleece might solve this. On the good side the leather did not stretch or move.

I got the scrap of leather from Helen in work. Her husband is a LARPer and I asked if he might have any leather offcuts to spare. He was making armour at the moment so I was in luck.

Needs piping or something on the outside, though to look really professional. Is it described as circular in the book? If not, an overlay square with slightly smaller circle cut out and a backing square would be fairly easy to make and could make it look really smart. You'd still need something finishing the new inside of the circle, though, I think.

Only description of the chest badge is "she seemed hypnotized by the salamander on his arm and the phoenix-disc on his chest".

But there is also this: "He stood in the hall of his house, putting on his badge with the orange salamander burning across it."

I was going to do the orange salamander as a separate badge, sort of like an award badge.

My full summary of the descriptions is here: http://qidane.livejournal.com/263142.html

The picture I found of the french police badge tabs are unfinished leather:

They of course take metal not embroidered badges, but I am sure I saw an embroidered one on a leather tab somewhere.
