Was at the health centre this morning. Not exactly great news, my blood pressure is 130/92, this is better than last Saturday when it was 140/92. It would be better if it was 130/82. Guess what, exercise is the key.

My BMI (body mass index) is 40.6, this is bad. A score of 20 to 25 is normal, 25 to 30 is overweight, 30 to 40 is obese, above 40 is morbidly obese. I think the word morbidly is the real key to the meaning of my score...

I have not actually put on that much weight in the last 18 months, about 6 Kg. My BMI has never been lower than 36, and that was some years ago when I was on the diet pills. They were amphetamine based (aka speed) and did work as an appetite suppressant. But it is hard to function on 3 to 4 hours sleep a night and you do not want to be on them long term.

Then there was the diet clinic I attended at Ninewells. I kept a food diary for that and after two weeks brought it in to the dietician. "Congratulations Mr Patterson, you have a healthy balanced diet. In fact you have two. Lets work on portion control."

That was when I used the list software in my Palm to keep track of how may of each food type I had eaten each day. That worked for a while. I remember I was allowed 6 bread/starch units a day, because that amounted to the same as I normally had for breakfast...

Then the clinic got cancelled as it lost its funding. I had got stuck in a bit of a rut by that point anyway. I got referred back to the doctor who said they could staple my stomach, I told him what he could do with his staples, and we left it at that. That was at least 2 years ago...
