50 years of space knickknacks

Spent part of this evening photographing my Sputnik musical box.

My great uncle Tom was in the merchant navy and bought this in one of the Russian Arctic ports soon after the launch. He showed it to me and told me the story of how he got it one summer when I was round painting his garden fence. When he died it went with his effects to mum's cousin Pauline. When she died she left her house to my sister. Mum found it in a box in the loft. I brought it home with me very well packed when I flew back from Mum and Dad's. The security guy at the airport said it looked very interesting.

Curiously enough, I've been thinking about your space knick-knack today - told my Russian colleague about it too. :)

It is beautiful and I am dead jelous! Even if ti's not a penguin. A real memento of Sputnic 1. Wow. I was at school when we heard and more than half the boys would not believe that "Science Fiction" (to which I was devoted all the way back then) could be comming true.

Still didn't get the base on the moon though. Sigh.
